Medisave

Surgical procedures & Medisave

Medisave can be used to offset costs for approved surgical procedures, at any of the private hospitals and day surgery centres where Dr. Wong operates. The following vitreoretinal procedures are eligible for Medisave claims, subject to the applicable withdrawal limits.

TOSP Code SL801V

Posterior Vitrectomy (Pars Plana)

The code used for most of my vitreoretinal surgery. It covers epiretinal membrane peel, macular hole repair, and retinal detachment repaired by vitrectomy, including endolaser and lensectomy where required.

Medisave-claimable

TOSP Code SL802R

Scleral Buckle for Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment repaired by scleral buckling rather than vitrectomy, using more than one plomb or an encircling band. This is the other code I use commonly.

Medisave-claimable

Intravitreal Procedure

Intravitreal Injections (Anti-VEGF / Steroid)

Injections for diabetic macular oedema, wet AMD, and retinal vein occlusion. Eligibility and withdrawal limits depend on procedure classification and hospitalisation status.

Costs

Retinal surgery costs in Singapore

The total cost of retinal surgery depends on the complexity of the procedure, the type of anaesthesia, hospital charges, and whether Medisave or insurance is used. Below is a general guide to what is involved in the fee structure, please contact the clinic for a personalised estimate.

What's included in the fee estimate

  • Surgeon's fee: covers the procedure, pre-operative assessment, and post-operative follow-up visits
  • Anaesthesia: most vitreoretinal surgeries are performed under local anaesthesia; general anaesthesia incurs additional cost
  • Hospital facility fee: operating theatre and recovery room charges at the hospital or day surgery centre where your procedure is done. These differ between venues, so the choice of venue affects your total bill
  • Consumables: surgical instruments, intraocular gas or silicone oil tamponade, laser probes, and other disposables
  • Medications: post-operative eye drops and any intraoperative drugs

Factors that affect cost

  • Procedure complexity: a straightforward vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane costs less than a complex retinal detachment repair with silicone oil
  • Combined procedures: some cases require cataract surgery at the same sitting, adding to the total
  • Tamponade type: gas tamponade is included in most cases; silicone oil adds consumable cost and requires a second procedure for removal
  • Length of stay: most retinal surgeries are day surgery, but complex cases may require overnight observation

MOH publishes fee benchmarks for common surgical procedures at private hospitals, including vitreoretinal surgeries. These benchmarks show the typical range of total bills (surgeon fee + hospital charges) and can help you set expectations before your consultation.

No-surprise policy: Dr. Wong's practice provides a written fee estimate before any procedure. The estimate itemises all expected charges so there are no unexpected costs. If you have questions about a specific procedure, please contact the clinic for a personalised estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fees, MediSave & Insurance

Can I use MediSave for retinal surgery?

Yes. Many retinal procedures (including vitrectomy, retinal detachment repair, and intravitreal injections) are MediSave-claimable under the Ministry of Health's approved surgical table. The clinic team will help you with the MediSave withdrawal paperwork.

How much can I claim from MediSave?

MediSave withdrawal limits depend on the procedure classification (Table 1A–7C). For example, vitrectomy typically falls under a higher table, allowing a larger withdrawal. The clinic will advise you on the specific amount for your procedure.

Which insurance plans does Dr Wong accept?

Dr Wong is on the panels of Great Eastern, HSBC Life, Prudential and Singlife. He also participates in corporate and employer schemes administered through Cigna, Parkway Shenton, Alliance Cigna, Alliance MediNet, MHC and Adept. If your insurer or scheme is not listed, please contact the clinic, as we may still be able to assist with claims or reimbursement. Our insurance guide explains panel and non-panel claims, pre-authorisation and what you pay.

Do I need a referral to see Dr Wong?

No referral is required for a private consultation. However, some insurance plans or Integrated Shield Plans may require a referral letter for claim eligibility. Check with your insurer or contact the clinic, and we can advise.

Will I know the costs before my procedure?

Yes. Before any surgery, you will receive a written fee estimate covering surgeon fees, anaesthesia, hospital charges, and consumables. There are no surprise bills. You will have time to review and ask questions before proceeding.

Can I use both MediSave and insurance together?

In many cases, yes. MediSave can be used for the hospital portion and your Integrated Shield Plan or private insurance for the remainder. The clinic team can help coordinate claims across both.

What if I am an international patient without Singapore insurance?

International patients are welcome. Fee estimates will be provided before your procedure, and the clinic can issue detailed invoices and medical reports for you to submit to your overseas insurer for reimbursement.
